DO WE OFFER EYE EXAMS

Eye Exams

Why Do We Not Offer Eye Exams?

Unique rules and regulations in Kansas make it impossible for an eye doctor to work for an Optician’s Optical shop. In the eyeglass business we talk about the 3 O’s (Optician, Optometrist, and Ophthalmologist). Certain States like New York have Optical shops that hire eye doctors. The Spectacle Shoppe wishes that the regulations were different, but they are not. The irony is that an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist can own and operate an Optical shop, but an Optician cannot give a refraction or have a refractionist in house. We are happy to give you a referral to a qualified Optometrist or Ophthalmologist for an eye exam.

FYI, an Optometrist is trained to give a refraction for eyeglasses and fit contact lenses as well as diagnose eye problems and treat some eye diseases. Even though an Ophthalmologist is trained in the same fields of practice they usually treat eye diseases and perform eye surgeries.

A Dispensing Optician specializes in fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses. For more information about the duties of a dispensing optician see: What is a Dispensing Optician?
